Exquisite Decay:

A Photo Essay from Charlie James

Exquisite Decay

This collection of photographs began as an exercise in contrasts undertaken on an overcast November afternoon. November is still late autumn in Arkansas, and though the leaves were passed their peak, they had a complexity that drew my attention. Looking at their curled and embattled surfaces, with their still brilliant colors, was a revelation. When I viewed the first image at home, I saw that the juxtaposition between leaf and background created a multi-faceted viewing experience. Not only did the decomposing leaf pose questions about beauty and loss, the crusty and vibrant background added a manmade dimension that was no less interesting. Happily, the initial effect is visual and emotional, followed by an intellectual response. Rounding this out is a spiritual dimension. The fact that decomposing leaves can rival the more prosaic beauty of their healthy counterparts is fascinating and metaphorical.

These photos are on display at Lily's Dim Sum ThenSome through July 3. There will be a reception on Sunday, May 21 from 2 to 4 pm with food and drink from Lily's. Twenty-five percent of the proceeds will be donated to Centers for Youth and Families H.I.P. Mentoring Program (Hope, Inspiration, and Protection) and Mentoring Children of Prisoners in Arkansas.
