Lily Kuonen
The primary focus of my work has come to concern many issues surrounding femininity and society.  The idea of the feminine "self" is a major overriding theme.  Within our societal and cultural context the "self" has been shaped and constrained, and my works deal with my feelings, responses, and reactions to this manipulation.  No matter what medium the form demands from oil paint to pantyhose, tight realism to complicated textures,  my creative process begins with structured planning.  I am almost scientific in my method.  Within each composition and each series I make very deliberate  choices. These choices translate into the formal elements of my pieces which in turn highlight the content and context. By intentionally juxtaposing harsh angles and elevations with the soft supple curvilinear forms of the body, or complementing definitive lines with organic textures,  I am consciously creating a composition structured almost to the point of architectural integrity.  I rely on my images to create an almost automatic relationship with the viewer, and this relationship draws them into a conversations of sorts.  The aesthetic conversation I have initiated enables the viewer to interact intellectually with the personal and universal meanings I instill in my work.
