Performer of the Week
XXzotic
North Little Rock-based rapper XXzotic flirts heavily with a third X, operating within the kind of aural porn that shies away from metaphor: “Nigga, I just want to FUCK you," is the chorus of her song “Keep it Pimpin'.” Call it wish-fulfillment rap without boundaries. It's a path to fame blazed by hip-hop's reigning divas, Lil Kim and Trina, and one gets the sense that XXzotic, born April Mills, could join their ranks. Her flow is distinctively Southern, but where Trina works her south Florida twang for maximum sass, XXzotic puts an edge on her delivery that makes everything she raps—even lyrics like, “Behind close doors/you can call me your ho, your bitch/whatever, daddy, anything goes”—sound domineering. She might let her man get nasty, but she'll always be on top.
A nine-year veteran of the game, XXzotic began her career as a vocalist, an impressive talent she still makes good use of on her song's hooks. Over the last two years, she's released two mixtapes, Go Hard or Go Home, Vols. 1 and 2, strong efforts that found her collaborating with rappers like Big Drew, Gangsta Boo, and 607 and producers Ferocious, Motef, and YK. She recently signed with Arkansas-based Next Page Entertainment, which will release her debut album, 1st Among Equals, at the end of the summer. The remix of the lead single, “Caught Up,” features Southern rap legend Pimp C.
Catch one XXzotic live show and you'll be committed to her cause. She's as dynamic of a performer as we have in the A-state. We've seen her attack the stage like she's krumping and slide into a sultry soul-step in the matter of minutes—always with back-up dancers.
